1906 Alldays & Onions
The Alldays & Onions Pneumatic Engineering Co Ltd was formed from two old established English companies. Onions was founded in 1650 and Alldays in 1720 and by the 1880's they were well established as suppliers to the blacksmith, foundry and railway industries.
Their first venture into motors was the tandem seat quadricycle of 1898 with a 4hp De Dion engine called the Alldays Traveller and was unusual for the time in having a steering wheel when most were using tiller steering.
In 1903 a 2 seat car of conventional layout was produced with a single cylinder engine and shaft drive transmission. This was followed in 1905 by the 10/12hp model with a side valve vertical twin engine. this was the classic Alldays with which they made their name and production continued up to 1913. Two and four seat bodies were available together with a commercial traveller version.
In 1906 a 16hp 4 cylinder car was introduced in 1908 Alldays acquired the Enfield Autocar Co. based in Birmingham for £10000 which included the factory and machinery together with three complete cars and ten chassis. This led to a revision of the model range with the Enfield name being used for the upmarket models.
An Enfield model 30/35 with a 4 cylinder engine of 6104cc was made in 1909/10 The 1914 Alldays Midget was the badge engineered Enfield Nimble Nine with a 990cc V twin engine at a price of £138.
The 3018cc Alldays 16/20 was the same as the Enfield 18.4hp but was £25 cheaper.
The Alldays 30/35 was the largest model with a 6 cylinder engine of 4786cc and was available from 1911 to 1914. The same year saw the Alldays 8/10hp model included in the model range being an enlarged version of the Enfield Midget with a 4 cylinder engine with the cylinders cast in pairs. There were also 10hp, 12/14, 16/20 and 25/30 models of Alldays and the eqivalent Enfields were the Ten, 14.3, 18.4 and 24.9hp. By 1918 the two companies were rationalised as Enfield Alldays Motors Ltd. The original Alldays & Onions company continued with general enginering and even made a motorcycle called the Allon from 1915 to 1924. the chairman of the company was Hyam marks who was also adirector of Austin. In 1925 the company was re-formed as the New Alldays & Onions Ltd but finally closed in 1927.
