For the 1984 season Porsche simplified the model line and applied the Carrera legend to the Coupe, Targa and Cabriolet models. These cars were powered by a new 3.2 litre engine, which showed the first major changes to the air-cooled flat six for 20 years. Eighty per cent of the engine was new and it developed some 231bhp, way up on the power of its predecessor, giving the car a top speed of 152 mph and a 0-100 sprint time of 13.6 seconds. Improvements to the brakes were part of the package and the ratios of fourth and fifth gear were uprated. 1986 saw a facelift to the dash panel and better seats whilst 1987 gave the cars a hydraulic clutch replacing the terribly out of date cable-operated system that had existed since the model’s inception.
