The Puritan Motor Car Company of Salem, Massachusets was run by Albert N. Locke who also ran the Locke Regulator Company, but he formed a separate organisation to make the steam car he had designed, although it was made in the Locke Regulator factory. It was powered by a 6hp vertical 2 cylinder engine, with single chain drive. Two advanced features for 1902 were a foot throttle and a steering wheel in place of the usual tiller. In addition the steering column could be folded forward to facilitate easy entry. Locke considered making petrol cars in 1904 decided against the idea and imported the Waddington car from England instead.
