1928 Rally

The Rally marque was made between 1921 and 1933. It was atypical French light car of the period. Unusually the first few cars used an American 989cc Harley Davidson engine with inlet over exhaust valves, and Harley Davidson clutch and gearbox. Other ex-US Army motorcycle engines could be fitted to the customers requests and motorcycles could also be converted to cars.
By 1922 the engine was standardised as the 4 cylinder 898cc Chapuis-Dornier and in 1923 an 1100cc C.I.M.E. engine was listed.
By 1924 there were 4 models available, the Tourisme, Sport, Grand Sport (with 30bhp C.I.M.E. engine) and a van. These were superceded in 1925 by various models on a longer wheelbase which included a saloon. The engine by now the more powerful 1202cc C.I.M.E. and the sporting versions were quite successful in hill climbs.
In 1926 there were 5 models of which the Grand Sport Speciale with 1100cc overhead valve engine and Grand Sport 1.5 litre with twin camshafts capable of 87 mph were the most sporting versions. In addition there were two new models with twin overhead camshaft and hemispherical combustion chamber engines an 1100cc 4 cylinder Type R4 7CV Course and a 1.5 litre straight 8 Type R8 10CV Speciale. The engines were to be supplied by Brault but their commitment to Lombard made the volume of production impossible and so these interesting models never went into production.
The new Type ABC cars for 1928 were attractive looking low slung models with a 1095cc Chapuis-Dornier engine which was replaced in 1929 by 1100cc or 1170cc SCAP units. There was racing version with 3 valves per cylinder and an optional supercharger which raised the top speed to 105 mph.
Both SCAP and Chapuis-Dornier ceased engine production in 1930 and so Rally turned to Salmson who, by then, had quit competition and were happy to supply engines to their rival. This Salmson engine was a twin overhead camshaft unit of 1300cc. The cars were short chassis sports or a longer one for saloon coachwork and some very stylish coupes.
In 1932 rally were offering the Type R15 with the latest 1465cc Salmson engine but by then the recession was really hurting and the company ceased to trade in 1933.
