The Targa Florio race, run on the 24th April 1927, was won by Materassi driving a 2 litre supercharged Bugatti Type 35B at an average speed of 44.15 mph for the 335.5 miles.
The picture shows a typical scene of the wild and dangerous 67-mile Sicilian circuit. The winner, Materassi is shown here close on the tail of a Maserati in the precipitoius ascent to the mountain village of Caltavuturo, once a notorious bandits lair.
